Sharedegg is a diagram of subcultures based on data collected from the people who make up those cultures. People categorize themselves using their objects and through their categorization are linked to the other people participating in the project. What has resulted is a deeply complex image showing social trends and unknown bonds between people through those trends.

Using the Many Eyes Data Visualization Software, our group was given the challenge to collect data in such a way that would allow us to utilize the software effectively. First, we needed to know what information goes into the categorization of a person? Also, How are we going to organize this to give us a relatively accurate portrayal of a person? What we ended up asking of our participants was just to list some of the products, and activities that they are involved with: what music artists they listen to, what movies they watch, what television shows they watch, what websites they might visit, brands they wear, accessories they wear, what electronics they own, and where they have lived.
After we had this information from the participant, we asked them to categorize those products and activities into preset subcultural categories (Bohemian,Casual,Cyber,Nerd,Emo,Gamer,Gangsta,Hardcore,Hippie,Trendy,Indie,F.O.B.,Sporty,Preppy,Punk,Rocker,Raggae,Skater). After gathering the information we need, we had to come up with a taxonomy that would allow this data to be best visualized within Many Eyes. Originally we had a taxonomy that was best formatted for the word tree format, where we started off with something very broad, and narrowed down by the end of the free text statement, (for example, Human Male Name Media TV TVShowName.). When we realized that taxonomy would not work for the network diagram visualization, we began the trial and error testing to find a way that worked.
In the end we arrived at a taxonomy that effectively allowed the network diagram to take in effect.
